How a Highlight Video Saved My College and Professional Career

During my senior year at St. Joseph High School, I was All-Conference, All-State, and started for a USSF Development Academy U-17/18 team. Despite these credentials, I found myself very late in the college recruitment process and unable to find a college team that had any serious interest in me. I had always been an avid video editor, and I was blessed enough that my parents filmed most of my games, but I never thought that the reason why I didn’t have a scholarship to a Division 1 program was because I hadn’t marketed myself the right way.

During the winter of my senior year, I finally decided to try and make my own highlight video from all of my clips for my Development Academy and high school seasons, and send that to as many schools as I could in a last ditch effort to get noticed. After a week, I heard a positive response from a Division One program, Fairfield University. They said that they had watched my video and were very interested in me. They also said that they would be coming to my next match to watch me play live. No pressure.

The video that I had edited together had done it’s job, get the coaches to come watch me play live and give me a chance to show what I was worth. I didn’t disappoint. Against Seacoast United, I played the full 90 minutes, creating a host of chances as a wide midfielder and in the back as our team fought to get a deserved 1-0 victory. The next day, I had an email waiting in my inbox for me from the Fairfield assistant, saying that they liked what they saw and that they wanted me to attend Fairfield University in the fall.

Without that highlight video, I would never have been able to play 4 years of college soccer at a Division 1 program, play in over 37 matches, win a MAAC Regular Season and Conference championship, and create priceless memories and friendships. It was also my gateway to playing professional soccer abroad in Germany. I know there are thousands of players out there just like me, who weren’t fortunate enough to make the right video and get seen at the right time. This is why Jack Burridge and I founded Soccer Spotlight in 2014, to help players with our same stories reach a place that most only dream of getting to.

If you are serious about playing soccer in college or professionally, let us help you achieve your goals.  Don’t be the player who looks back in 4 years thinking, ‘man, if only I was able to show coaches how good I am with a highlight video’.
